As parents, we all want the best for our babies and to protect them.  We excitedly prepare the baby\u2019s room well before their arrival by applying a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting to keep the room cozy and warm, purchase new furniture and of course, add all our personal touches to make it just right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything appears wonderful for the baby\u2019s safe arrival however, there is more that CANNOT be seen to the naked eye.  Unfortunately, there are so many pollutants and allergens that are in this newly prepared space.  It can be safely confirmed now to say that indoor air can be more harmful than outside air due to indoor sources of contamination.  Poor indoor air quality has become more of an issue than ever before because more homes are built to be airtight, and also because we spend more of our time indoors.  For both these reasons, we really need to take a closer look at our indoor spaces and address what is lurking in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A baby\u2019s room is equipped with so many \u201cnew\u201d things.  Furniture, carpeting, paint and toys all emit VOC\u2019s (volatile organic compounds) that are a large group of chemicals that pose a risk to human health and can greatly affect our well-being.  (See Blog: What are VOC\u2019s?)  This is only one reason to consider air purification in the baby\u2019s room.  Air purifiers will provide cleaner air for him\/her to breathe while asleep or engaged in activities. These VOC\u2019s found indoors can cause prolonged or permanent health issues.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will an air purifier help to eliminate in a baby\u2019s room?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that an air purifier will keep the baby\u2019s room free of airborne allergens. We know that VOC\u2019s will most definitely be trapped and removed, but what about bacteria, viruses, odours, dust and other allergen-causing substances?  They too will all be eliminated.  Sounds fairly simple because it is!  Our units have up to five stages of filtration.  This means that the air that runs through the unit will pass through and be cleaned by up to five filters.  A pre-filter, a HEPA filter, 2 UV bulbs, a photocatalytic oxidation filter and a carbon potassium filter will ensure that all pathogens up to 0.3 microns will be captured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indoor air pollution can trigger a wide range of health concerns in children.  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s keep in mind that a newborn baby will take 30-60 breaths\/minute, and infant (1-12 months) will take 30-60 breaths\/minute, a toddler(1-3 years) will take 24-40 breaths\/ minute, a preschooler (3-5 years) will take 22-34 breaths\/minute, a school age child (6-12 years) will take 18-30 breaths\/minute and an adolescent(13-17 years) will take 12-16 breaths\/minute.   Children\u2019s health is quickly affected by poor air quality because their respiratory systems are smaller and less developed than those of an adult. Children’s<\/strong><\/em> lungs are especially sensitive to the harmful effects<\/strong><\/em> of air pollution<\/strong><\/em>, because they breathe<\/strong><\/em> rapidly and inhale a high concentration of pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) \u201cair pollution is stunting our children\u2019s brains, affecting their health in more ways than we suspected.\u201d  Also, \u201cair pollution affects neurodevelopment\u2026negatively affecting mental and motor development.  It is also damaging children\u2019s lung function, even at lower levels of exposures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
