WHAT IS MOLD?

Mold om the walls

Mold is naturally part of the environment and belongs to the kingdom of fungi.  According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), “outdoor mold breaks down dead, organic matter such as fallen leaves, dead trees, etcetera, however, indoor molds should be avoided”.  Health Canada too, considers indoor mold growth to be a significant health hazard.  They maintain that “mold is the common word for any fungus that grows on food or damp building materials. It often looks like a stain and comes in a variety of colours and in some cases, mold may not be visible but may have a musty odour. If it is allowed to grow, mold can contribute to poor indoor air quality.” (Canada.ca)

WHERE DOES MOLD GROW?

mold from floods

Mold can grow in damp or wet areas in your home caused by water leaks, flooding, or high humidity that can result from everyday activities like cooking or showering. It can grow on wood, paper, fabrics, drywall and insulation. It can hide inside walls, floors, appliances, furniture or above ceiling tiles. Mold can be found in damp places such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements and kitchens.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF INDOOR MOLD?

Depending on how much mold is present or how long it has been there, the symptoms can include:

*irritation of eyes, nose and throat

*coughing

*shortness of breath

*wheezing

*difficulty breathing

*skin rashes

*stuffy nose

*chest tightness

WHAT TO DO TO REMOVE MOLD?

The most important thing to do once mold is visible in your home, is to call in a specialist (a mold remediation company).  They will provide professional treatment to clean up and restore your home.  Once this is underway, it would be an opportune time to consider air purification for your home.

HOW CAN AIR PURIFICATION HELP WITH MOLD?

Mold in homes

Once the mold issue has been resolved by the specialist, or you may have done so on your own, it is important to know that it can grow back as quickly as 72 hours later.  An air purifier is a wonderful addition to keep the mold spores at bay by keeping existing mold from spreading to other areas.  It is a great preventative measure that offers extra protection to you and your loved ones.  The air quality in your home will improve significantly.    Air purification units that offer a HEPA filter, UV lights, and carbon filters are quite effective at removing mold spores.  As mold spores float into the air, they will become trapped in the tightly interwoven fabric of the filters and the UV lights are an extremely effective form of disinfection which in turn, provides better indoor air quality.  Air purification is a non-toxic way to clean the air in your home.  It is affordable, safe and effective.  It provides relief and enhanced home comfort.
